After the departure of Sheikh Hasina, opposition party BNP held a rally in Dhaka’s Nayapaltan on August 7. Khaleda Zia, the chairperson of the party, ordered BNP leaders and workers to refrain from retaliatory activities in that rally.
Applauding this direction of BNP Chairperson, Sajib Wazed Joy said, “I am very happy with the recent statement of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia. He said – what is done is done. I am saying the same — let us forget the past and move forward, not indulge in the politics of revenge. We want to be together.”
“I believe that dialogue is very important in politics. We can argue, we can agree or disagree on an issue and eventually come to a compromise.”
“We want to work with BNP for a fair election and restoration of democracy in Bangladesh. Only our united efforts can guarantee a peaceful democracy and free and fair elections in Bangladesh.”
Sheikh Hasina was forced to leave the country after resigning from the post of Prime Minister on August 5, in the face of the movement of students and the masses for more than a month. Joy, however, claimed that her mother had not officially resigned. Currently, Hasina is in the safe haven of New Delhi, the capital of India. Since he moved to India, his son Joy has been addressing the media regularly.
Meanwhile, after the departure of Sheikh Hasina, an interim government has already been formed. Bangladesh’s Nobel-winning economist Dr. Muhammad Yunus is the chief advisor of this government. On Thursday, the advisers of that government also took oath.
However, Joy told Reuters that the Awami League is ready to challenge the legality of the formation of an interim government in the court while Sheikh Hasina has not officially resigned – while she is still the Prime Minister and Head of Government of Bangladesh.
